During the Victorian Era, steam power played a pivotal role in the expansion of the British Empire, and the Cape Colony was no exception. The first steam train line in the Cape, inaugurated in 1862, connected Cape Town to Eerste River, with the route quickly extending to Stellenbosch and Wellington within a year.
Recently, we had the pleasure of partnering with the Ceres Railway Company for a steam train journey from the Waterfront in Cape Town to the Elgin Railway Market. We spent a delightful morning at the market, sampling artisan foods, savoring fresh coffee, and enjoying live music. Our return trip featured a scenic ride through the stunning mountains of the Elgin Valley.
